9.20.15

Today was spent preparing for our epic adventure.  For the next four days we'll be backpacking the San Juan hut system; hiking about 8 miles a day from rustic hut to hut through the Sneffels range.  I've grown up in and under these mountains and I've had this adventure on my list for a long time.  I'm so excited it's finally happening!  I'm also strangely excited to live out of a backpack again.  It's been a while.

I've been working diligently on my new website, which I will promote here when it's finished.  Today I took headshots.  Of myself.  Which if you've never tried it, is a very interesting/challenging project.

When I started traveling years ago I gave away or sold nearly all my possessions. For years I lived out of a backpack or car, sleeping in tents, tree houses, shacks, hostels, fancy hotels, mansions, boats, planes, rvs, and everywhere in between. Since collecting souvenirs would have been cumbersome and impractical I saved little things from my adventures in the world: a birds nest with broken eggs from Colorado, coral from Fiji, moss from Wasington state, jade from New Zealand, sand dollars from Costa Rica, feathers from hundreds of different birds inhabiting many different continents and so on and on. I'd smuggle these treasures back and store them in a small cedar box which was kept in my car. As the years and the travels mounted I added boxes to store my glorious, unique and precious artifacts. I love to open them and remember all those adventures and all my time in the wild places of the world.

Something crazy happened with my polarity filter here.  It's not normal and I like it.

my mom's new home is so lovely and cozy and beautiful.  My brother has planted a small jungle of flowering plants in the yard, the funky old foundation in the back has been removed and the whole thing looks great.  It was build on the same footprint as the the old house and is a bit surreal, waking up in the guest room and feeling like I'm in the kitchen.

“I have lots of things to teach you now, in case we ever meet, concerning the message that was transmitted to me under a pine tree in North Carolina on a cold winter moonlit night. It said that Nothing Ever Happened, so don't worry. It's all like a dream. Everything is ecstasy, inside. We just don't know it because of our thinking-minds. But in our true blissful essence of mind is known that everything is alright forever and forever and forever. Close your eyes, let your hands and nerve-ends drop, stop breathing for 3 seconds, listen to the silence inside the illusion of the world, and you will remember the lesson you forgot, which was taught in immense milky way soft cloud innumerable worlds long ago and not even at all. It is all one vast awakened thing. I call it the golden eternity. It is perfect. We were never really born, we will never really die. It has nothing to do with the imaginary idea of a personal self, other selves, many selves everywhere: Self is only an idea, a mortal idea. That which passes into everything is one thing. It's a dream already ended. There's nothing to be afraid of and nothing to be glad about. I know this from staring at mountains months on end. They never show any expression, they are like empty space. Do you think the emptiness of space will ever crumble away? Mountains will crumble, but the emptiness of space, which is the one universal essence of mind, the vast awakenerhood, empty and awake, will never crumble away because it was never born.”

We went kayak whale-watching!  We didn't need any of our rain gear!  We saw like 30 Orca whales!  Mind blown!  What more can be said?
