we said goodbye to sweet zephyr dog today. it was very peaceful and nurturing, at home in the living room. we gave him lots of love, and a bone, and he was loving and sweet right to the last moment. almost immediately after the injection he just laid his head down and a few seconds later the vet said, "he's gone," with tears in his eyes.
goodbye sweet zephyr! you were a really great dog.

after more tests (note the shaved belly) we've learned that zephyr has inoperable lymphoma. he has a large mass in his chest cavity and one on his spleen. because of the pressure in his chest cavity he's developed horner's syndrome in his left eye. his breath is labored and he's losing weight really rapidly. in the past week his loss of muscle mass is noticeable and he's having trouble getting around. it is so hard to watch and made even harder by the fact that he is still such a nice fellow. he's not whining, he's still blissfully happy to cuddle with his people and he even tolerates roo trying to play when he clearly can't. his deterioration is so rapid we've decided to put him to sleep on wednesday. everyone is really sad.

we canceled our camping plans for the weekend because zephyr is suddenly very sick. his blood tests showed he's anemic, which might possibly be from the tick ever he had in costa rica, or it could point to something more serious. more tests will be done next week but it's not looking great.
