the greater distance

This is our world.
It is cold, unforgiving, driving snow like sand into your eyes.
It is howling, battering, ripping at your clothes.
It is shrieking and cracking and moaning and whispering and silent.  It is otherworldly.
Our world!
It is golden, sparkling, leaving you breathless.
Carrying your laughter, prayers, shouts and songs away in a reckless wind.
It is stars frozen in water, it is sunlight blown off mountains.
This is our world!
Terrible and wonderful and magical all at once.
Don't hide, don't look away.
Don't leave here without at least once, feeling your insignificance,
as you walk straight into it's beating heart.

happy independence day

 we started the morning with a hike in colorado national monument.  turns out every 4th of july a group of marines climbs independence rock and hoists the american flag.  it was pretty awesome to happen upon.  after the hike, in the heat of the day we found a place to get in the river, then decided to go even deeper into the desert.  we headed to moab, got a camp site and inter tubes, floated down the colorado and caught the fireworks in the park.

happy earth day everyday!

john arrived today and we celebrated earth day by planting new native plants in the garden, watering our emerging lawn, making mojitos with mint from the front beds, and opening up one of the compost tubs to harvest some dirt.  

thank you mother earth, for water, for air, for plants, for pollinators, for supporting us all and for taking all the waste and turning it into soil.  xx
